Car free zones

new york

This post I’m going to start with a reference to another blog, the blog of Colin Beavan (aka No Impact Man). In his post he describes how it looked when the city of New York turned Park Avenue, a normally very busy road in the center of New York, in a car free zone. The evolution towards more and more car free zones in cities is something I already posted about earlier.

On this site you can find some more examples about car free zones throughout the world. As you can see, the most of the examples are very touristic attractions. This is therefor an important reason for governments to decide on making a zone car free. The other major reason is the decrease of exhaust emissions and smog in the city centers as I stated in previous posts.

To finish I also included this article about the evolution toward more car free zones in Leuven, to show that this topic is also topical in our own city.

This was my last post of my blog, for my blog paper I will focus on the impact of exhaust gases. I would like to thank everyone for reading my post and commenting.

  1. Last year, in the course”beyond engineering”, our topic is “car free city center in Leuven”, which i think is the same idea as you stated in this post. In our case, we try to re-plan the city construction, makes people take bicycle or tram to go through our city. However, this really need government and cityzen’s support. it may cost a lot to re-plan the city construction, and some people said they don’t want our city be car free because this will bring them some Inconvenient (last time we interview some passer-by). So do you think car free can really realize in our city?

The roads around our place are crazy scary for bicyclists and the cars who drive on them. We cannot safely share the road and it is awful.
I have long thought of an alternative only lane (for bikes, skateboards, vespas etc)…

  3. As Xiao Yao said, we discussed in beyond engineering the possibility of having a car free city center in Leuven. The people of leuven are very divided on this subject. It will make the city more child friendly., people will be much safer on the streets, … But what to do if you went shopping, or you want to move to a different house. And not to forget, what whit old people that can’t walk far anymore.
I support the idea of car free zones, but those zones shouldn’t be too large and there should be a possibility to give some residents a pass to drive the car in those zones.
